2010 John Butler Memorial Scratch Race: 27th February 2010
Big weekend in local cycling with the 2010 pursuit Championships on the track last Friday and the prestigious John Butler memorial contested Sunday. In its 35th year the John Butler is a major trophy event on the Bathurst Cycling Calendar and signals the start of the build up to the Bathurst Daybreak Rotary Club’s B2B on the 11th April 2010, which also includes the Jack Mackay Memorial on the 21st March. With 4 separate Grades contesting the 2010 Butler there was plenty of cycling action on the hills south of Bathurst.
As expected with the trophy up for grabs there where plenty of attacks early in A and B grade with Steve Bennett, Charlie Gascoyne, Dennis Martin all on the move early. However it was Caloola Hill where the favourites made their decisive attack with Blair Windsor and Craig Hutton establishing a winning lead. The pair clearing out for a big win with Windsor winning the dash to the finish. Behind the leaders their was a mighty battle for third with the Bathurst and Orange riders taking turns to attack each other. Former masters world champion Charlie Gascoyne riding a nice race to take third infront of Ryan O’Donnell and last years winner Gus Tobin. The B Grade event was run in conjunction with the A Grade race with Peter Cady finishing well up in the overall results and a clear winner of B Grade, defeating noted hill climbers Simon Egar and Jodie Martin.
C grade used the Quarry hill course with Luke Cutler and Daniel Stibbard applying the pressure right from the start and by the top of Quarry hill had a winning lead over the field lead by Peta Gillard. At the finish Cutler and Stibbard had a great sprint to the line with Cutler winning by centimetres form Stibbard. Meanwhile Ian Grant and Jasmine Lee caught Peta Gillard with the trio then fighting it out for the minor placing, Lee leading out the sprint but Grant finished to fast taking the third place in front off Lee and Gillard
D Grade was a tactical battle with Glen Allen trying to break clear before the hill, However it was Cyntarah Micarelli that was clear once they reached Quarry hill. Paul Waine was first to reach the talented junior and then Michael Roberson, with the three riding to the finish to fight out the placings. Robinson winning with a well timed sprint from Micarelli and Waine, with hard working David Knox taking 4th infront of the fast finishing Trina Crompton.
Junior Nationals
Bathurst 2010 state Junior Representative Harrison Carter has returned from the Nationals Junior Track Championships (18/03/10 at Melbourne’s DISC Velodrome) a much wiser athlete after a top 12 ranking in the 500m TT and a 5th place in his favourite event the 2km Individual Pursuit. Harrison started the Under 15s Pursuit as the Number 1 seed after setting the fastest time in Australia this year when winning the NSW state U15 Pursuit Championship recently, That certainly adds a bit of pressure to a 13year old performance and Harry missed the finals by a fraction of a second. What is certain is he has learnt plenty from his first National Track Championships, and is already looking at his next race
Jack McKay Memorial Handicap
Bathurst held another of it annual Trophy races on the weekend, with a good field contesting the Jack McKay Memorial Handicap. Considered a key supporter of cycling in the Bathurst District for over half a century, Jack Mckay promoted the sport through his cycling and work with the Western Advocate where he was know to his readers as “pedal”.
The 2010 memorial event featured a number of strong performances by local juniors, with teenager Jess Marshall leading the event early with hard riding Chris Davey. The challenge coming initially from State Masters Championships Medallist Tiff Mason and Rosemary Hastings following by the groups of Gary Baker and Paul Waine and the fast moving Phil Cole, Cyntarrah Micarelli, Ian Hill and David Lowe bunch.
Meanwhile back marker Craig Hutton and Angus Tobin started fast catching the block bunch of Ryan ODonnell, Charlie Gascoyne and Stephen Bennett to form a threatening bunch at the back of the field.
However it was the middle bunches that where building momentum and looking likely winners of the 2010 trophy. Joined by a number of quicker riders on the hill the 9 minute bunch surged to the lead in the second half of the race, with promising junior Billy Hutton coming away for his first major win. Having only taken up the sport seriously in the last 12months Huttons win was impressive defending noted hill climber Simon Egar, and another inform junior Cruz Conroy who is building an impressive record in local events. Back after a break Jarrod Bell has found form quickly taking 4th in front of Simon Hine and Steve Brilley, while another of the clubs junior Daniel Stibbard defeated Toireasa Gallagher, David Reece and Oranges Brian Kennelly for 7th in the annual trophy event. The back marker finished just behind the top 10 with Craig Hutton recording fastest time (58mins 39secs).
